Nine straight wins and counting.
The Davao Occidental Cocolife Tigers tightened their grip of the top spot in the team standings by defeating Zamboanga Valientes in overwhelming fashion, 93-68, in the south division of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MP BL) recently at The Astrodome in Valenzuela City.
The Tigers of team owner Claudine Bautista of Davao Occidental LGU, backed by Cocolife president Elmo Nobleza, FVP Joseph Ronquillo and AVP Rowena Asnan, took control of the game right from the get-go to mount a huge 44-24 lead at halftime.
The squad suffered three straight setbacks following a couple of victories to open the season, but managed to string nine wins for a pacesetting 11-3 record in their division.
Davao posted a couple of victories in the season opening followed by 3 straight setbacks in their pacesetting 11-3 record in their division.
The Valientes tried to narrow the gap in the third canto behind the gutsy plays of veteran Leo Avenido, Jonathan Parrena and Reed Juntilla. But back-to-back treys and timely baskets from ex-pros Leo Najorda and Bonbon Custodio kept the Tigers out of reach of Zamboanga, which slumped to its eighth loss against six wins.
`“The hard work that our veteran players demonstrate from practice to actual games rubbed off on our homegrown players and it inspired them to perform at a high level just like in this victory against Zamboanga,” said Davao Cocolife Tigers manager Ray Alao. DANNY SIMON
