Ex-wushu world champ wins sambo gold in Pre-Aimag tilt

Four-time wushu world champion Rene Catalan recently won the gold medal in the sambo competition of the Philippine Pre-Aimag at the Harrison Plaza and gained a shot at a berth for the national team seeing action in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (Aimag) in Turkmenistan. 

The 36-year-old Catalan, who represented the Catalan MMA Club, defeated Danilo Dilag of Spar Fight Institutte in the men’s 52-kilogram category to earn an opportunity at donning the Philippine colors again in a different sport come the Aimag event on September 15 to 24.

Sambo is a martial art and combat sport that originated from Russia, which will be played in the Aimag.

Catalan is also a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter in ONE Championship, where he prevailed in January over Adrian Matheis to improve his record to 2-2.

Other winners in sambo include Dolores Meek (adult women 60kg), Maribel Angan (adult women 52kg), Genil Francisco (adult men 57kg), and Rogelio Enumerables Jr. (adult men 66kg). Peter Paul Patrick Lucas
