In a surprise move on social media, Roland Mueller announced last Wednesday his retirement from international football play hours before the Azkals are set to take on Southeast Asian rivals Malaysia in a Fifa-friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
The 29-year-old Ceres goalkeeper publicized his decision to leave the national team for good.
“I had a great time. I was and will always be proud to play for this beautiful country… (It’s a) hard decision to say goodbye,” Mueller said in a statement on Instagram.
Mueller’s retirement came as a shock to the football community, as he is at the prime of his career. He was even inserted to the training pool, and is expected to be in the active line-up for the Azkals-Malaysia match scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off later Wednesday either as a starter or backup to Neil Etheridge.
Both squads are using the said friendly match as a tune-up for their AFC Asian Cup Qualifier stint beginning this week. PNA
