Motorcycle makers posted 42% growth in H1, target 1M sales

Motorcycle manufacturers aim to sell over a million motorcycles this year, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) said recently.

This was revealed after the industry group closed the first half of 2016 with a strong double-digit growth of 42 percent, compared with the same period last year.

In a briefing on Aug. 18, the MDPPA said total sales in the January-to-June period reached 544,669 motorcycle units, from 382,568 in the first half of 2015.

“The introduction of affordable, but reliable motorcycle models propelled the sales performance of MDPPA member-manufacturers. The traffic congestion in major cities, such as Metro Manila, also prompted commuters to look for alternative modes of transportation. Commuters consider motorcycles as a fast and affordable transportation alternative,” MDPPA President Rodel I. Pablo said.

By types of motorcycle, the moped model or underbone motorcycles had the largest number of sales in the period with 205,636 units.

This is followed by business models with 171,035 units, automatic motorcycles with 125,528 units, and street motorcycles with 42,149 units.

Total sales of motorcycle makers in the Philippine market reached 850,509 units last year.

Established as the Philippine Motorcycle Manufacturing Program Association in 1973, the MDPPA serves as its members’ advocacy arm with the government and other industry or private organizations.

The organization is composed of Honda Philippines Inc., Kawasaki Motors Philippines Inc., Yamaha Motor Philippines Inc., Suzuki Philippines Inc. and Kymco Philippines Inc. All are active in the government’s Motor Vehicle Development Program.

The MDPPA is affiliated with the Federation of Automotive Industry of the Philippines, Federation of Philippine Industries, Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries, and International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association. PNA WITH TMM
