Philippine women’s volleyball team eyes bronze in Malaysia SEA Games

The Philippine women’s volleyball team is eyeing a bronze-medal finish in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia.

Despite having only four months to train the team before the biennial tournament kicks off in Kuala Lumpur, head coach Francis Vicente is optimistic.

“I am confident of forming this team into a competitive one,” said Vicente during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters As­sociation’s Forum where he also announced the members of the national training pool led by Rachel Anne Daquis (PSL-Cignal) and Alyssa Valdez (V-League).

Also named to the training pool were Ateneo’s Maddie Madayag and Katrina Mae Tolentino; De La Salle’s Kim Dy, Kim Fajardo and Dawn Macandili; National University’s Jaja Santiago; Perpetual’s Lourdes Clemente; University of the East’s Roselie Baliton and Kathleen Arado; UST’s Ria Meneses and San Sebastian College’s Gretchel Soltones.

Others who passed the tryouts conducted by the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) in Manila, Cebu and Davao were Philippine Super Liga players Genevieve Casugod and Bia General (Generika), Den Den Lazaro (Cocolife), Maika Ortiz, Din Din Manabat and Abegail Marano (Foton), Rhea Dimac­ulangan, Aiza Maizo Pontillas and Mika Aireen Reyes (Petron), V-League’s Myla Pablo and Elaine Kasilag and Army’s Jovelyn Gonzaga.

Also present at the Forum were Larong Volleyball sa Pilipi­nas Inc. (LVPI) officials led by President Joey Romasanta, Peter Cayco and Ramon Suzara. PNA
