Dalena to hold one ‘Last Full Show’ at the Cultural Center

To cap off its Visual Arts program for 2016, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will mount a retrospective exhibit by renowned artist Danilo Dalena, titled Last Full Show, on the third and fourth floor galleries of the CCP on December 10 and will run until March 4, 2017.

Last Full Show takes off from where the general public was last served by the broadest sweep of Dalena’s body of work—his 1990 survey exhibition, also held at the CCP.

Fueled by his virtual absence on the gallery circuit for over 25 years, the perception that Dalena had retreated from art all those years is dispelled with Last Full Show, which reveals suites of drawings and paintings that the artist made recently, despite the several health crises he experienced through the years.

Characteristic of Dalena’s signature affinity with the scatological and repellant, what could be of particular interest is his yet-unfinished series of images that reference unseemly acts and antics in seedy moviehouses. While loosely taking on the structure of cinema with establishing sequences, transitions, freeze frames, and denouements, Last Full Show is posited as a grand unfolding, rather than definitive account.

Dalena himself insists that the wordplay be taken in the spirit of the elaborately risqué closing numbers of his famed Alibangbang (bar) series and the final all-star game of the now-moribund Jai Alai, where the performance goes full throttle and the one-upmanship is cutthroat and in-your-face.

Last Full Show may be viewed from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., beginning December 10. Admission is free.
