DOTr shoring up renewable energy resources

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is expanding renewable energy resources, particularly offshore wind, as part of the government’s commitment to generate clean energy via wind turbine generators.

Transport Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento said the expansion of renewable energy resources is part of the Offshore Wind Energy Development in the country, wherein offshore wind farms will be constructed near major ports across the country.

“DOTr vows to utilize aggressive yet sustainable strategies such as the formulation of a long-term Port Development Plan for the needed ports and harbor infrastructures not only for the OSW projects, but also for future national initiatives,” Usec. Sarmiento said during the Philippine Ports and Logistics 2024 expo.

Usec. Sarmiento cited the Philippine-Norway energy and maritime cooperation to formulate pragmatic strategies on how to expand renewable energy resources, particularly offshore wind.

“This massive national project demonstrates the potential of the Philippines to generate clean energy through wind turbine generators,” he said

The establishment of port infrastructures, according to the transport executive, is “extremely important” to attain successful commercial operations of the OSW project by the year 2028.

“These ports will host the assembly and storage of OSW turbine components and accommodate massive equipment and machinery,” Usec. Sarmiento explained.
