Mindmovers, La Carlota rule Gov. Oaminal 8-in-1 chessfest

OZAMIZ – Mindmovers Chess Club and La Carlota City shared the limelight by winning the rapid and blitz team championships, respectively  in the first-ever Misamis Occidental Gov. Henry S. Oaminal 8-in-1 Chess Festival held at the Ozamiz Auditorium  recently

Mindmovers, composed of FM Ellan Asuela, David Rey Ancheta and Roberto Pablito Salomon, clinched the championship with a total of 20.5 points and the top prize of 200,000.

Asuela, who also topped the individual rapid competition, led the way with 8.5 points.

His teammates, Ancheta, added 6.5 points, and Salomon contributed 4.5 points.

Hamburger Attack of FM Alekhine Nouri, Romeo Sadia III and Romeo Minoza, took runner-up honor with 20 points, while  Golden Chess Friends of David Elorta, Will Maghanoy and  Danilo Obeso, wound up third with 19 points.

Nouri finished with 7.5 points, followed by Sadia with 6.5 points and Minoza with six for Hamburger Attack, which brought home the runner-up prize of P100,000

Elorta had  eight points, Maghanoy had six and Obedo had five for Golden Chess Friends, which earned P60,000 for third place.

Costbusters Solar Power Ozamiz of  Rommel Ganzon (7.5), Anatoly Pascua (5.5) and Jezreel Lopez (5.5) finished fourth with 18.5 points, while Cong. Alan Dujali-1 Team of Jayson Salubre (7), Henry Lopez (6.5) and Aaron Aton ( 5) wound up fifth with 18.5 points.

Costbusters and Cong. Dujali earned P40,000 and P20,000, respectively.

In sixth place also with 18.5 points is  RCM Gingoog of Allan Cantonjos (6.5), Jeriel Manlimbana (6.5 points) and Ronnel Cantonjos (5.5 points) for P16,000.

Completing the top 10 finishers are  Pagalaum-MisOr-C (Richelieu Salcedo, Jeff Rivera, Arlan Calido), seventh with 18 points;  Zamboanga City-B  (Paulo James. Florendo, Joey Albert.Florendo, Akin Adil), eighth with 18 points; Zamboanga City-A (John Cyrus Borce, Abdul Daggung, Patrick Erle Florendo), ninth with 18 points; and MD-Cebu (Julius Ablin, Rodney Opada, Ronald Bancod),10th with 18 points.

Special awards with cash prizes were given to Mario Mangubat of Cebu City, top senior; Christy Ramayla of Ozamiz  City, top female; John Dave Lavandero of Cebu City, AFM Andrey Ainsley Dolorosa of Cebu City and Remigio Galenzoga of Baybay, Leyte, top junior; and IM Angelo Young, Jefte Crebillo, Johnny  Wellen Carzano, top Misamis Occidental players.

In the blitz category, the La Carlota team of Diego Abraham Caperino, Nelson Villanueva and Adrian Singson finished with 19.5 points to edge Paglaum-MisOr-C of Richelieu Salcedo, Jeff Rivera and Arlan Calido with 19 points and Ortigas-RCUDP of  Vince Angelo Medina, Jan Francis Mirano and Christian Mendoza with 18.5 points for the title and the P20,000 top prize.

Paglaum-MisOr and Ortigas-RCUDP settled for  P14,000 and P10,000, respectively.

Also making it to the Top 10 areTeam Larry Dumadag (Jonathan Docot, Jerry Areque, Gomobar Balabagan), fourth with 17.5 points;  Cong. Alan Dujail-1 (Jayson Salubre, Henry Lopez, Aaron Aton), fifth with 17 points; MD Chess (Ronald Bancod, Rodney Opada, Julus Ablin), sixth with 17 points;  BRD Chess  Academy (Joel Pimentel, Khent Delig, John Dave Lavandero), seventh with 16.5 points;  Ozamiz City Team-A (Darwin Laylo, Rey Urbiztondo, Archluas Turno), eighth with 16,5 points;  Costbusters Solar Power (Rommel Ganzon, Anatoly Pascua,  Jezreel Lopez), ninth with 16.5 points; and Hamburger Attack (Alekhine Nouri, Romeo Minoza, Romeo Sadia), 10th with 16.5 points.

The rapid and blitz chess competitions served as part of the Gov. Oaminal Chess Festival, a three-day chess event organized by the Asenso Misamis Occidental Chess Association.

AGM Rey Urbiztondo is the tournaemnt director, IA James Infiesto is the chief arbiter and FA Michael Joseph Pagaran and NA Kevin Yap are deputy arbiters.
