Goitia backs AFP, PCG amid attacks on loyalty

Amid renewed calls for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to speak out on corruption and questions over the loyalty of uniformed services, civic leader Dr. Jose Antonio Goitia defended the AFP and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), saying they remain steadfast protectors of the nation and the Constitution.

Citing an OCTA Research survey showing that seven in 10 Filipinos reject military intervention in politics, Goitia said, “Our soldiers and coast guard officers stand on the frontlines not for politics or foreign powers, but for the Filipino people. To question their patriotism without proof is to insult every Filipino who has ever worn the uniform.”

As chairman emeritus of ABKD, PADER, LIPI, and the FDNY Movement, Goitia described attacks on the military’s integrity as “dangerous distractions” amid ongoing threats to Philippine sovereignty.

He was responding to an exchange between Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte and PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela, where Duterte alleged foreign influence in defense policies—a claim Tarriela dismissed as “divisive noise.”

Goitia warned that disinformation weakens national unity: “We cannot fight for our seas while fighting among ourselves. Freedom of speech is not freedom from accountability—criticism must be based on truth, not resentment.”
He concluded, “When we protect our defenders, we protect our Republic. The Philippines will stand strong only if we stand together—under one flag, one people, and one truth.” TRACY CABRERA
