DOH reports surge in dengue cases

The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a significant spike in dengue infections this year, recording 95,262 cases from January 1 to April 21, marking a 75% increase compared to 54,556 cases during the same period in 2023.

Despite the rise, health authorities noted a positive development with a decline in new cases between March 16 and 29, during which 9,289 cases were logged. This figure is 23% lower than the 12,050 cases recorded from March 2 to 15.

“Nasa 0.36 percent naman ang case fatality rate (CFR) o halos apat sa bawat isang libong kaso ng dengue ang namamatay,” the DOH said, highlighting that the death rate remains relatively low.

The agency credited the drop in recent cases to intensified vector control efforts in affected communities.

“Iniuugnay ang mababang CFR sa mas maagang pagkonsulta ng mga pasyente base na rin sa health education program ng ahensya tungkol sa mga sintomas na dapat bantayan,” it added, emphasizing the impact of the DOH’s ongoing awareness campaigns.

The presence of Dengue Fast Lanes in government hospitals has also been vital, allowing patients to receive prompt treatment and preventing severe complications.

As the rainy season approaches in July or August—typically a time when dengue cases surge—the DOH is calling on the public to stay vigilant. It encourages communities to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by keeping their surroundings clean and dry.

To prevent infection, individuals are reminded to wear long-sleeved clothing and pants, apply insect repellent, use insecticide-treated curtains or screens, and sleep under mosquito nets.
