PhilHealth urges public to monitor thyroid health

In line with the observance of World Thyroid Day yesterday, May 25, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has encouraged its members to seek medical consultation if they notice any unusual bodily changes that may indicate thyroid issues.

World Thyroid Day highlights the importance of raising awareness about thyroid diseases, which impact the body’s endocrine system and can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.

Data from a national study on thyroid disorders indicates that 8.3 percent of Filipinos experience abnormalities in thyroid function. Meanwhile, statistics from the Philippine Cancer Registry reveal that thyroid cancer occurs more frequently among women, with an incidence rate of 17.3 per 100,000, compared to 7.3 per 100,000 among men. The estimated five-year prevalence of thyroid cancer in the country stands at 19,260 cases.

To support patients with thyroid-related conditions, PhilHealth provides benefit packages for illnesses such as congenital hypothyroidism, chronic thyroiditis, and parathyroid gland disorders. These packages offer financial coverage ranging from P15,795 to P23,790.

For those requiring surgical intervention, procedures such as thyroid biopsy, partial thyroid lobectomy, and thyroidectomy are also covered, with package rates between P15,639 and P90,675.

PhilHealth reminded members that these benefits are available in all accredited hospitals nationwide. To facilitate smooth access to these services, members should present their PhilHealth identification number and updated member data record during hospital visits.
