Starbucks to cut Jobs, shut stores amid sales slump

Starbucks announced Thursday that it will slash nearly 900 non-retail jobs and close dozens of stores in North America as part of a restructuring plan to curb costs.

The US-based coffee giant said its company-operated store count in the region will shrink by about 1% in fiscal year 2025, bringing the total to nearly 18,300 outlets across the US and Canada, including licensed stores.

“This includes the difficult decision to eliminate approximately 900 current non-retail partner roles and close many open positions,” the company said, adding that it will provide transfer opportunities where possible and offer comprehensive severance packages to affected staff.

The move comes as Starbucks grapples with declining global sales, which fell 2% in the third quarter, following similar drops in the first and second quarters of the fiscal year.
