The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that EDSA near the corner of West and North Avenues in Quezon City will be closed to traffic beginning February 1, 2026 due to scheduled girder launching activities of Metro Rail Transit 7.
The lane closures will ensure safety of the motoring public while heavy equipment and machinery will lift parts of a steel structures that will connect the MRT-7’s North EDSA turnback track along West Avenue.
DOTR-Project Management Office sought help from MMDA and the Quezon City Government to implement temporary lane closures and traffic rerouting schemes to mitigate its impact on the motoring public.
MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said traffic enforcers from MMDA and Quezon City government, and traffic marshals from DOTr’s private contractor will be deployed to minimize the effect on traffic.
“Minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA during nighttime but big impact on traffic is expected during full closure to give way to the construction activities,” said Artes, who was joined by DOTr Undersecretary TJ Batan and Alfredo Kimpo, Assistant City Administrator for Quezon City Government, during the press briefing.
Along EDSA near North Avenue, portions of the two outermost lanes on the northbound direction and the two innermost lanes on the southbound direction will be closed to vehicle traffic starting Feb. 1.
The closed lanes will serve as sites where tower support systems will be built for the girder launching activities. The closures will also ensure that motorists and commuters are not put in harm’s way while heavy equipment maneuver during the lifting and launching works.
Girder launching activities will be done from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM.
During lane closures, two zipper lanes will be opened at the opposite direction to lessen the activity’s impact to motorists and commuters.
After girder launching activities are completed, the tower support systems will be taken down, and restoration works at closed lanes will be conducted by the MRT-7 contractor, according to DOTr-PMO.
Reopening of closed lanes at northbound direction of EDSA is scheduled on May 8, while the southbound direction on May 18.
As of December 2025, MRT-7 is 82.01% complete with commercial operations from North EDSA to Sacred Heart targeted by the first half of 2027.
