Meralco to explore nuclear energy portpolio

Manila Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manny Pangilinan, is advancing its nuclear energy strategy through new collaborations with top French institutions.

Alongside the Meralco Power Academy (MPA), the company recently visited Université Paris-Saclay (UPS) and several leading nuclear research bodies in France to explore partnerships aimed at bolstering the Philippines’ energy future.

Meralco executives, including EVP Ronnie L. Aperocho and SVP Edgardo V. Carasig, engaged with UPS officials and key industry players such as Électricité de France and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission.

The discussions focused on knowledge sharing, capacity building, and the potential integration of nuclear power into the country’s energy portfolio.

A central component of Meralco’s efforts is the Filipino Scholars and Interns on Nuclear Engineering (FISSION) program, which seeks to cultivate the next generation of nuclear energy professionals.

The program, in collaboration with UPS, will send Filipino scholars for advanced studies in nuclear engineering, with the first batch expected to begin in 2025.

Through its Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) initiative, Meralco aims to ensure the safe, sustainable, and economically feasible development of nuclear power in the Philippines.

Meralco’s proactive stance on nuclear energy is part of its broader strategy to provide a reliable and diversified energy mix for the country’s future.
