Five Filipino students were recognized for their participation in an international art exhibition that honors children from a village in the Czech Republic who died during World War II, that country’s embassy in Manila announced recently.

In a statement, the Embassy of the Czech Republic said the exhibitions committee of the International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice had decided to give awards of appreciation to Patrice Sebastian Olaguerra, Gabriel Marcus Cruz and Noah Vychoco of Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, and Renaf Kya Cua and Abigail Tiu of St. Stephen’s High School.

The five students received their certificates from Czech Consul Veronika Hirzel and Czech Deputy Chief of Mission Jan Vytopil. Their artworks had been displayed in the Lidice Gallery in Lidice, alongside over 1,500 works of children from all over the world.

Established in 1967, the annual exhibit commemorates the children of Lidice who were killed by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War. The exhibition became known worldwide in 1973.

More than 25,000 artworks were received last year, not only from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but also from other 70 countries, including China, India, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe.

Also, the Czech embassy said it is inviting Filipino students between four and 16 years old to join the 45th International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice this year. The deadline for joining is on February 28. TMM
