Tanduay is actively shaping the future of the rum, bartending, hospitality, and tourism industries through grassroots education and engagement, specifically targeting students and young professionals who will lead these fields.
Brand Manager Gem Leonard Boy highlights this initiative as a key investment in tomorrow’s industry leaders. Central to this effort is the Tanduay Rum Master class, which introduces students to rum not just as a beverage, but as a product deeply rooted in Filipino heritage, craftsmanship, sugarcane, aging, blending, and innovation.
Originating in 2016 at EARIST Manila, the program has grown significantly—expanding its reach to multiple private and state universities, training schools, mobile bars, and corporate sessions averaging at least three institutions per month.
Resident bartender Jake Alano, alongside guest bartenders and production partners, recently led a master class at the University of Perpetual Help Las Piñas for over 100 hospitality and beverage management students. These interactive sessions equip participants with essential skills, covering basic bartending, sensory rum appreciation (color, aroma, body, taste, and finish), cocktail mixing, and flair tending.
Beyond hands-on mixing and product knowledge, the master class places heavy emphasis on responsible drinking and the ethical duties that future hospitality professionals hold when serving alcohol to guests. Alano notes that understanding a spirit’s intricacies allows future bartenders to make better recommendations, craft superior cocktails, communicate effectively with customers, and deeply appreciate the local craftsmanship behind what they serve.
