Israel honors 8 OFWs killed in Hamas-led attack

The Embassy of Israel in Manila honored the eight Filipino victims of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and the ensuing conflict during a commemoration marking the third anniversary of the incident.

Led by Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh, the commemoration carried the theme “Three Years of Resilience Despite the Loss.” The ceremony brought together bereaved families, survivors, and Philippine government officials for a candle-lighting ceremony and a photo exhibit honoring the victims and recognizing the courage and experiences of those who survived.

In her remarks, Kursh expressed solidarity with the victims’ families, assuring them of Israel’s continued support as they cope with their loss.

“We will be standing together in times of sorrow, in hugging those eight families, and God willing, in times of many celebrations and times ofy peace in Israel,” Kursh said.

Four Filipino nationals—Paul Vincent Castelvi, Loreta Alacre, Angelyn Aguirre, and Grace Cabrera—were killed during the October 7 attacks. Four others—Cydrick Garin, Leah Mosquera, Mary Ann de Vera, and Lucille Jean Gershovich—subsequently lost their lives amid the continuing conflict.

The commemoration also recognized Filipino survivors whose experiences underscored the human cost of the violence. Among them was Camille Jesalva, who protected the elderly woman under her care during the attacks, as well as Jimmy Pacheco and Noralyn Babadilla, who were taken hostage and later released.

Jesalva reflected on how the events of October 7 profoundly changed the lives of Filipinos who experienced the attacks firsthand. She also expressed gratitude to the Israeli and Philippine governments for their assistance to survivors and bereaved families as they continue to deal with the lasting effects of the tragedy.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan reaffirmed the Philippine government’s commitment to supporting the victims’ families and safeguarding the welfare of Filipino migrant workers in Israel.

Kursh, meanwhile, reiterated Israel’s commitment to assisting the affected families in coordination with the DMW and OWWA. She also acknowledged the contributions of Filipino workers to Israeli society, highlighting the enduring ties between the two countries. VITO BARCELO JR.
