Davao runners triumph in 39th National Milo Marathon leg

Davaoeños Sonny Wagdos and Judelyn Miranda grabbed the top spots in a 21-kilometer race that is the centerpiece event of the 2015 National Milo Marathon qualifying leg in Davao City recently.

The city, called the Crown Jewel of Mindanao, saw about 8,500 people on the race’s challenging routes, in what was considered the biggest and grandest events of its kind in the Philippines. Among the runners was reigning Milo Marathon King Rafael Poliquit, who already qualified for the finals because he won last year’s marathon.

Wagdos completed the race with a time of 01:15:25, beating Michale Achalico (01:15:56) and Manny Marfil (01:19:34), who finished in second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, Miranda finished with a time of 01:32:57, putting Madelyn Carter (01:48:19) in second place and Hazelvic Villanueva (01:52:07) in third.

The race is the second Wagdos won in Davao. The 21-year-old Univeristy of Mindanao senior has been running since he was in elementary school.

For her part, Miranda has won six regional leg championships: three in Butuan City and three in Davao. Like Wagdos, she has been running since she was a child, and has joined her schools’ track and long-distance-running varsity teams. She has been joining the Milo mar-athon with her elder sister for 20 years now.

Wagdos and Miranda each took home P10,000 in cash and a trophy, as well as a slot in the marathon’s finals, to be held on December 6 in Angeles City, Pampanga province. There, they will vie with other elite runners in the country for the Milo Marathon King and Queen titles.

Milo will send the new marathon winners on an all-expense-paid trip to the United States for a chance to run in the prestigious 2016 Boston Marathon.
