The 2025 DOE-Petron Fuel EcoRun successfully made a big comeback last week with a total of 68 vehicles – that included internal combustion engine, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric — from 22 car brands participating highlighting their fuel economy performance under real-world driving conditions last week at a designated stretch of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (Tplex).
The participants were flagged off from Petron Tplex Northbound, turned around at the Rosario, La Union rotunda, and finished at the Petron Tplex Southbound, completing a distance of approximately 156-kms.
Department of Energy director for Energy Utilization Management Bureau Patrick Aquino and a representative from the sponsoring Petron Corporation were on hand to greet the participants after the run.
The 2025 DOE–Petron Fuel EcoRun is not a competition but a demonstration of how different vehicle technologies—from internal combustion to hybrids and electric—perform under actual expressway driving conditions. By providing the official fuels, Petron ensures that all ICE-powered and hybrid vehicles are tested with the same high-quality benchmark fuels, guaranteeing fairness and credibility in results.
All ICE-powered and hybrid participants were fueled by Petron XCS and Petron Turbo Diesel, Petron’s benchmark fuels that combine advanced formulation and proven performance. Petron XCS (95-octane premium gasoline) is powered by Tri-Activ Technology as it maximizes power and mileage while protecting engines. Its superior detergent additives prevent harmful deposits in intake valves and injectors, ensuring cleaner combustion and better fuel economy. Petron Turbo Diesel, on the other hand, is engineered with an advanced additive system, it delivers stronger pulling power, restores lost performance, protects sensitive CRDi components, and reduces harmful emissions.
“By powering this EcoRun with our best-in-class fuels, we demonstrate that efficiency begins at the pump. Petron XCS and Petron Turbo Diesel are trusted by millions of Filipino motorists every day because they deliver real performance and real savings. Petron is proud to have been DOE’s partner in past EcoRuns and continues to champion this advocacy. By promoting energy efficiency, we are not only helping motorists save on fuel costs but also contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable transport sector,” said Lubin B. Nepomuceno, the general manager of Petron Corporation.
Beyond fuels, Petron is also enabling cleaner transport by offering EV charging facilities at its TPLEX stations, underscoring its commitment to a future-ready, diversified energy portfolio that supports both traditional and alternative fuels.
The 2025 DOE–Petron Fuel EcoRun builds on a legacy that began with earlier DOE EcoRuns in 2016 and 2017, where Petron was also the official fuel partner. These pioneering runs raised public awareness about fuel-efficient driving, generated critical performance data, and set the stage for industry-wide improvements in vehicle efficiency.
