In the middle of her presswork as Features Editor of Market Monitor, Gem Suguitan had to choose between journalism and caregiving for her folks.
At the time, her dad was bedridden while her mom was withdrawn from the crowd.
On top of that, the family had to move to Vintar, Ilocos Norte where the family of her father is rooted.
Gem couldn’t do anything but to make the most of the many important things for her family without sacrificing her penchant for the arts.
If not writing that has to take a backseat, it is painting that she continues in the idyllic place as Vintar.
This is where she did her art piece about women and sustainability and entered it at the 2nd Sining Filipina art competition organized by Zonta Club of Makati and Environs.
Suguitan’s masterpiece won 7th place in a competitive spirit among ten finalists last week at the SM Aura.
At the inaugural Sining Filipina last year, Gem won the Grand Prize in the Non-Figurative category. (Boy Villasanta)
