A groundbreaking contribution to Philippine media literature, “On Air Na! Pinoy News Anchors Live!” has been released as the first comprehensive guidebook on news anchoring in the country. Published by the University of Santo Tomas, the book will be officially launched this month at the UST campus.
Written by Jose Maria G. Carlos, former Assistant Vice President for News at CNN Philippines, the book traces the evolution of news anchoring in Philippine media, delving into the ethical, editorial, and production challenges that news anchors face today. It also examines the critical success factors behind building an effective and credible career in news broadcasting.
Drawing from over 40 years of experience in broadcast journalism, Mr. Carlos presents a rich tapestry of insights from 31 past and present news anchors representing leading networks. Among those featured are Korina Sanchez and Pinky Webb (Bilyonaryo Channel), Pia Hontiveros and Rico Hizon (formerly CNN Philippines), Julius Babao (TV5), Atom Araullo (GMA7), and Alvin Elchico (ABS-CBN). The book also includes perspectives from 10 news managers and executive producers from mainstream media on how they guide and support anchors in their professional journeys.
The publication arrives at a pivotal moment for Philippine media. As news anchors increasingly take on field reporting and multimedia work, they are confronted with new realities — the rise of artificial intelligence, the growing influence of digital news creators and influencers, and the declining dominance of television as a primary source of information. The book discusses these challenges and ways to address them.
“These developments put to the test the role of news anchors as trusted sources of information,” Carlos explains. “They must uphold ethical and professional standards, maintain mental and physical discipline, and contribute meaningfully to their network’s performance. I wanted to remind anchors of the crucial role they play in society and inspire a renewed commitment to excellence.”
Beyond its relevance to practitioners, “On Air Na! Pinoy News Anchors Live!” is envisioned as an essential resource for academics, researchers, students of media and communication, and members of the general public seeking to deepen their understanding of broadcast journalism and enhance their media literacy.
