Bersamin honors ‘Manong Johnny’

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Friday paid tribute to the late Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, recognizing the political stalwart for six decades of service that profoundly shaped Philippine history.

“Juan Ponce Enrile was an icon of stability during times of tribulation in our history,” Bersamin said, extending condolences to the Enrile family. He described the late statesman, affectionately known as “Manong Johnny,” as “a legal luminary and political titan whose contributions to public life profoundly shaped the history of our country.”

Bersamin highlighted Enrile’s steadfast dedication to championing the Filipino people’s interests throughout his distinguished career.

“In his capacity as a Cabinet member across various administrations, he worked tirelessly and selflessly to strengthen our institutions and uphold the principles that make our nation great,” he said.

As a senator and Senate President from 2008 to 2013, Enrile leveraged his extensive government experience to craft legislation that promoted citizens’ welfare, while strengthening the legislative chamber to face political challenges.

Bersamin recalled his enduring mantra, “Gusto ko happy ka (I want you to be happy),” which remains etched in the consciousness of the Filipino people.

Born on February 14, 1924, in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Enrile first rose to prominence in the 1960s as Minister of National Defense under the Marcos administration.

Elected to the Senate in 1987, he became known for his legislative expertise and later returned to public service as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

“As we grieve his loss, may we find inspiration in his work and example, and strive to preserve the worthy legacy he has left behind,” Bersamin said.
