MMDA to add speed-radar to NCAP cameras by 2026

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is upgrading its cameras for the no-contact apprehension system by equipping them with speed-detection capability, according to Chairman Don Artes who said most fatal over-speeding incidents occurred late at night.

Artes said the agency currently relies on manual speed guns, but engineers are finalizing the integration of speed radars into the MMDA’s AI-powered NCAP cameras, which operate 24/7. Launch is expected by early next year.

He said motorists frequently oversped at night when traffic is light, leading to accidents. He added that the feature would address hours when enforcers were no longer on duty.

Artes believes the upgrade would reinforce discipline on the road by reminding motorists that violations were still caught even without visible enforcers, as the NCAP system continuously monitors traffic.
