Globe Telecom is expanding satellite-to-mobile connectivity for customers traveling abroad through a service involving Japanese telecommunications provider KDDI Corp. and Starlink, the company said on Thursday.
The Ayala-led telecommunications company said the arrangement would allow eligible Globe customers to access satellite-enabled mobile connectivity through KDDI’s network using Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology.
“Through our partnership with KDDI, we are exploring how satellite-enabled connectivity can help overcome network boundaries and create a more seamless travel experience for customers,” Globe Consumer Mobile Business Head Eric Leif Tanbauco said in a statement.
KDDI has partnered with Starlink parent Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) to provide direct-to-cell satellite connectivity.
Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology is designed to connect compatible mobile devices directly to low-Earth orbit satellites, allowing mobile services in areas without conventional terrestrial network coverage.
Globe said customers would need a compatible 5G or LTE Android device, an active GoRoam promo, and an unobstructed view of the sky to access the satellite-enabled service.
“Our goal is to eliminate global cellular dead zones and deliver reliable connectivity, aiming for a world where if you can see the sky, you can connect anywhere. Through our partnership with Globe and Starlink Mobile, we are taking another step toward expanding satellite-enabled roaming beyond traditional coverage areas,” KDDI Japan Executive Officer Makoto Kadowaki said.
