Deutsche Bank, SM tie up to expand local schools

Representatives of Deutsche Bank AG Manila and the SM Foundation with school, Department of Education (DepEd) and Local Government Unit (LGU) officials inaugurated a two-story, four classroom building in the campus of Northern Tacloban City National High School.

The donation came complete with desks, tables, blackboards, electric fans with toilet provision for each classroom.

The desks and tables were made by a community of Dis-abled based in Sta. Fe, Leyte.

The school’s population of 630 students is expected to balloon to 900 in school year 2016-2017 due to the recently built 400 relocation houses by SM Cares in Barangay Kawayan.

Principal Delia E. Soria said the new edifice was “timely as we expect an influx of students from the relocation site of the “No-Build zone” areas in Tacloban City.

At present, most of the students come from barangays New Kawayan, Old Kawayan, Sto. Niño, Tagpuro, Suhi, and Sta. Elena.

The formal turnover of the school which was effected last April 24 was attended by Deutsche Bank VP for Operations Jojo Reyes with 25 Deutsche Bank employees who flew in from Manila at their own expense to paint wall murals in the newly built classrooms of the NTNCHS.

It is a common occurrence in Deutsche Bank donations where volunteer bank employees undertake mural paintings in walls of its donated schools.

In 2015, when the partners built two schoolbuildings in the Polambato Elementaty School in Bogo, Cebu, bank employees from the Asia- Pacific region flew in to do the murals in the eight classrooms of the donated schoolbuildings. SM Foundation was represented by Carmen Linda Atayde, executive director for Education while the LGU was represented by Vice Mayor Sambo Yaokasin who in his acceptance speech profusely thanked the donors saying “it is not just a building for us, Yolanda survivors, it is love from our countrymen and hope to all the children who will use the classrooms. To the volunteers: your work will not be in vain for we promise to take care of this building.”

The 13th school building built through the partnership has a total of 52 classrooms. This is their third partnership along the Yolanda corridor. Other schools built through this partnership are Llano Elementary School in Caloocan City; Bacoor National High School in Cavite; Sitio Tapayan Elementary School in Taytay; Manuel I. Santos Memorial High School in Taytay; D. Tuazon Elementary School in Quezon City; San Manuel Elementary School in Bulacan; Tanza Elementary School in Navotas, Pateros Elementary School in Pateros; Florentino Joya Elementary School in Cavite; and Wawang Pulo Elementary School in Valenzuela City.
