Ice Seguerra and Liza Dino act out scenes from real life experiences of LGBT members.

Acclaimed play, ‘Choosing’ returns in June

PASSERBY By Nestor Cuartero

After watching a 40-minute preview of ‘Choosing’ on May 13, I congratulated Liza Dino and Ice Seguerra for having come up with such a brave play.

Ang tapang,” I said.

In writing and acting in the play, the couple have boldly exposed their inner souls, warts, joys, and all.

Liza and Ice admitted that the final act, the confrontation between the two protagonists, happened in real life.

It was like they have opened the door of their marital life, secrets and all, to the public.

Why are they doing this? ‘Choosing,’ the play, hopes to widen people’s understanding of the LGBT community with the end in view that understanding can lead to acceptance.

“This production means so much to us, and it’s our heart and soul in this piece,” according to Liza. She credits partner Ice in writing additional monolog to some parts and director Anton Juan for guiding them every step of the way.

The acclaimed play, ‘Choosing’ returns from June 6 to 15, 2025, at the Doreen Black Box Theater, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.

A production of Fire and Ice LIVE!,  a premier Filipino production company,  the powerful two-person play written by Liza herself, returns following its highly successful 2024 debut.

The play is described as a bold and deeply moving story about love, identity, and the choices that define us.

“Through Fire and Ice LIVE!, we are committed to showcasing world-class Filipino productions and keeping our local performing arts scene thriving,” says Liza.

‘Choosing’ is an intimate, genre-defying theatrical work inspired by the real-life experiences of its lead performers, who are a married couple offstage.

The story follows Stella, a cisgender woman, and Mitch, a transgender man, as they reflect on pivotal moments in their lives—from early self-awareness and sexuality to the trials they’ve overcome together.

The play explores themes of gender identity, love, trauma, healing, and personal transformation, bringing to light the often unspoken challenges of relationships navigating deep change.

Through raw and heartfelt monologues and dialogues, Stella and Mitch confront issues such as sexual abuse, consent, and rebuilding trust, ultimately discovering the power of choice in embracing joy and staying true to themselves.

The play’s central message—we are the choices we make—has struck a powerful chord with audiences. Since its debut, ‘Choosing’ has been lauded by critics and theatergoers alike.

Described as a “brave, thought-provoking piece that tackles identity and relationships with honesty and heart,” the production was praised for its courageous storytelling, compelling performances, and emotional depth.

The original staging, helmed by internationally renowned director Dr. Anton Juan, was celebrated as an “intimate set of confessions” that brought audiences to laughter, tears, and introspection.

‘Choosing’ easily became one of the standout theatrical works of 2024.

“This rerun is our way of responding to the overwhelming support for Choosing,” shares Ice Seguerra, who not only stars as Mitch but also serves as co-producer.

The 2025 run coincides with Pride Month, making it an especially timely celebration of LGBTQ+ stories.
