BDO Foundation completes 250 health center rehab nationwide

BDO Foundation has completed the rehabilitation of 22 rural health units (RHUs) and primary care facilities across the country so far this year, bringing to 250 the total number of health centers upgraded under its program since 2012.

The milestone was reached with the turnover of the Compostela Rural Health Unit in Cebu, the foundation’s 22nd completed facility for 2026. It also coincides with BDO’s 50th anniversary celebration this year.

The 250 rehabilitated health centers, endorsed by BDO and BDO Network Bank branches in their respective communities, now serve more than 11 million Filipinos, particularly those in areas exposed to natural disasters and other disruptions to essential healthcare services.

The 22 facilities completed this year are located in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Antique, Zamboanga del Norte, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental, Davao Oriental, and Davao de Oro.

The rehabilitation program addresses the condition of local healthcare facilities, many of which have suffered from years of wear and tear and damage caused by natural disasters.

In Compostela, local health officials said Typhoon Tino and an earthquake last year disrupted medical services, with damaged roads, landslides, and unsafe facilities making it difficult for residents to reach healthcare providers.

The health center had also developed deteriorating ceilings, cracked walls, damaged restrooms, and unusable wash areas, affecting both patients and medical personnel.

Despite damaged infrastructure and interruptions in electricity, water, and communications, health workers continued providing services, often amid shortages of medicines and medical supplies.

The upgraded facilities now offer safer and more comfortable surroundings, with improved lighting, interiors, and infrastructure intended to support more efficient healthcare delivery.

The improvements also help local governments comply with Department of Health and PhilHealth standards, potentially enabling communities to access additional resources.

Through its rehabilitation program, BDO Foundation supports government efforts to advance universal healthcare and contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to promote healthy lives and well-being for people of all ages.
