BSP Governor attends unveiling of Rizal bust in Czech Republic

BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla, Jr. attended the unveiling of the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Czech National Bank (CNB), the central bank in Prague, Czech Republic on 25 June 2018 together with his wife, Mrs. Teresita Espenilla. This was one of the highlights of his bilateral meeting with his counterpart, CNB Governor Jiøí Rusnok.

In his remarks, Governor Espenilla said, “through this ceremony, not only do we honor Dr. Jose Rizal, but we honor the friendship forged in the past. We enjoy the present because of the cumulative work, courage and intellectual contributions of those who came before us. Let us remember this today as we reaffirm the great friendship between our two nations and as we look forward to further strengthening our bilateral ties for years to come”.

The Philippine national hero formed a lifelong friendship with Ferdinand Blumentritt, a scholar who studied Tagalog and published works on the Philippines. In 1887, Rizal visited Blumentritt who at that time was a professor in the City of Litomerice. Their years of correspondences were marked by intellectual exchanges on Philippine political issues and views on independence. Their letters would later become significant resources for supporters, scholars and historians in both countries.
