Filipino fencers competing at the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, will face serious players, according to Philippine Fencing Association president Richard Gomez.
“I know they will perform well. They were in good shape when they left the country,” said Gomez.
The Filipino fencers – Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Jylyn Nicanor, Hanniel Abella, Noelito Jose Nathaniel Perez and Christian Concepcion – who are aspiring for slots in the Tokyo Olympics underwent a bubble training in Ormoc City for three months.
“Only the champions per event will get the Olympic slot, so it will be a tough tournament somehow. The good thing is that they were able to train well in Ormoc,” Gomez said. “The only thing that we are looking forward to is the level of their performances.”
