Sen. Joel Villanueva underscores the need to raise the public’s awareness about the prevalence of online romance scams after the PNP-ACG reported nine people falling victim to fraudsters in January alone.

Heightened awareness against online love scams urged

With online love scams becoming increasingly sophisticated, Senator Joel Villanueva has called for intensified public awareness campaigns and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in combating cybercrime.

Villanueva’s statement follows a report from the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) revealing eight cases of online romance scams in January alone.

According to PNP-ACG data, a total of 72 cases were recorded in 2024, highlighting the persistent threat posed by fraudsters who exploit vulnerable individuals through deceptive online relationships.

These scams often lead victims to send money or share sensitive personal information, believing they are in genuine romantic engagements.

In a news release on Friday, Villanueva stressed the importance of using technology as a force for good rather than as a tool for deception and financial exploitation.

The lawmaker also raised concerns over the growing sophistication of these scams, which are often linked to organized cybercrime networks.

Villanueva further warned about the alleged involvement of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in various fraudulent activities, including online romance scams.

He noted that despite evolving methods, these operations continue to originate from the same groups that have long been associated with illicit cyber activities.

The senator urged the PNP-ACG to intensify its efforts in educating the public on how to recognize and avoid falling victim to these scams.

He emphasized that equipping individuals with the right knowledge is crucial in preventing financial and emotional harm caused by cybercriminals.

As the use of AI continues to advance, Villanueva reiterated the need for stronger measures to ensure that technology is harnessed responsibly and not manipulated to exploit unsuspecting victims.
