HOPE AND PRAY

We live in interesting times.

Internationally, the world’s superpowers are aligning towards bi-polarity,  ultimately  clustering into US and Non-US camps, like two warring Latin-named fraternities in disorganized brawls. Then, as if the on-going  mayhem wasn’t enough, there is a  spicier sideshow of names and emails of the high and the mighty proposing to cavort with under-aged pizza pies in the Virgin islands. The cause of it all lies below ground with a tombstone name – Jeffrey Epstein.

Nationally, we are flooded with political faces and money on the table worthy of a fiesta boodle fight.   There was a time when suitcases were filled with clothes and toiletries on the way to the airport; nowadays the suitcases travel from the basement of banks to the residences of the ultra rich and famous.

Methinks  we are on the road to failing to provide our children and grandchildren a much better world than we inherited from our parents and grandparents. At no other time in history is total destruction of the world a distinct possibility, a probability even, given the kind of world leaders inhabiting totalitarian states and ideologies today. The Pope himself alluded to these leaders who act more like tyrants and masters of violence than the peacemakers and diplomats that they are supposed to be. The hopes that created the United Nations in 1945 to prevent another world war look dimmer and more distant, drifting farther from the shore rather than arriving at port. The Carpenter from Nazareth wished us all a home, but we have chosen to get His hammer instead and hit our neighbor on his head. Maybe the words of that Beatles song with its lyrics – “Imagine there’s no country, nothing to kill or die for. “ For peace in the world, best to go back to Family.
