Multi-awarded journalist Nestor Cuartero joins TMM family

The Market Monitor proudly announces the addition of esteemed journalist, book author, and educator Nestor Cuartero to its editorial team as the new Lifestyle Editor. 

With an illustrious career spanning several decades, Cuartero brings a wealth of experience and a distinctive voice to the publication. Known for his insightful articles and engaging storytelling, he has garnered numerous accolades for his contributions to journalism and literature.

Cuartero has written, on his own, three books, At Large, At Leisure, PH Movie Confidential, and Easy Listening. He has also co-written, in tandem with other writers, several other books.

He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1974 at the University of Santo Tomas, where he was a faculty member and former coordinator of its Journalism Department. He was also an associate at UST’s Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.

A veteran journalist who started his career upon graduation, he has worked for both print and broadcast media. Cuartero was a long-time editor, 36 years, at the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, for which he won several awards in journalism.

Among these are: Grand Prize in Primer Premio de Periodismo given by Instituto Cervantes in 2000; First Prize in the 2007 La Sallian Scholarum Awards for coverage of youth and education issues in media; 2010 Binhi Awards’ Environment Journalist of the Year from the Philippine Agricultural Journalists (PAJ).

Cuartero is also a two-time SALUTE  awardee (2023 and 2024) at the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards (NJLA) given by Philippines Graphic Magazine for both poetry and short story.  His online column on life and entertainment, PASSERBY, is widely followed.

He remains a columnist and feature writer in the Bulletin, Tempo, and Liwayway.

In 2012, he was among 10 outstanding alumni in various fields, including Journalism, honored by the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters through the AB Gantimpala Award.
