The essence of what Philippine independence is, the players at June 12, 2026 Mercadillo in Intramuros were able to embody.
First, it was the Filipinism that spoke about their art, especially music.
The use of the native language was one.
The nationalistic sound of Erick Valena’s piano, the patriotic songs of Riot Session Band, the little Filipina voice of Joliena Pagsinuhin, the giant diaphragm of tot singer Prince Rolan Gazo and the future matinee idol of Ithan Bernardino were another.
The inspirational music education of mACEtro Music Art by Acey Burwell was something to learn from the cultural traditions of the Philippines.
The native delicacies served by Mercandilla were yummy to savor.
The bazaar presented by the same organizer was ours to share.
The promenaders were happy to while away their Freedom Day.
All these were things that made the 128th celebration of Philippine Independence truly relevant and memorable. (Boy Villasanta)
