Pole vaulter EJ Obiena will continue to be supported in his dream to clinch the country’s first Olympic gold in the Tokyo Summer Games next year.
Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico said he is confident the Philippine Sports Commission will continue to extend financial support to Obiena.
Juico, an executive board member of the Amateur Athletics Association, revealed that the World Athletics is doling out $500,000 (approximately P25 million) to federations that are struggling to fund the training of their athletes due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
But Obiena needs to qualify in the initiative. The world body said only those who have avoided doping violations and have shown significant loss of support and income compared to last year are likely to qualify.
Juico said they would try, but there’s no assurance if Obiena would make it.
