The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has smashed its goal of registering one million new voters for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE)—and it did so in record time.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia announced last week that the poll body exceeded the target just five days into the 10-day registration period.
“Based on our estimate, we have more than one million new registrants after only five days,” Garcia said in an interview. “We were surprised, but we are very happy.”
As of the latest count, Comelec has received 1,001,970 applications since voter registration kicked off on August 1.
Garcia credited the milestone to strong cooperation between Comelec, other government agencies, and private sector partners who helped drive public participation.
Region 4-A (Calabarzon) led the surge with 138,843 registrants, followed by Central Luzon with 123,904 and the National Capital Region with 79,517.
