Phl seeks more flexible AIIB financing for key infra projects

The Philippines is seeking more flexible financing arrangements from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to accelerate vital infrastructure projects, encourage private sector investment, and make energy more affordable and climate-resilient.

Department of Finance (DOF) International Finance Group Undersecretary Joven Z. Balbosa presented the country’s recommendations during the Governors’ Business Roundtable Discussion at the AIIB Board of Governors’ 2026 Annual Meeting in Doha, Qatar, on September 28.

The discussions centered on expanding the development impact of the multilateral lender and introducing innovations across the project development and implementation cycle.

“We urge the Bank to continue developing innovative financial instruments and mobilizing private capital. We call on the Bank to prioritize scaling renewable energy, reducing power costs, and strengthening climate adaptation and mitigation projects,” Balbosa said.

The Philippine delegation also called for increased grants and technical assistance to improve project readiness and social development outcomes.

It further proposed lower commitment fees and greater flexibility in addressing implementation bottlenecks that could delay infrastructure projects.

Balbosa, one of the AIIB’s 12 Directors, represents the Philippines in the bank’s governance and policy discussions.

The AIIB is a multilateral development bank that finances sustainable infrastructure projects across Asia.
