Vocal virtuosos to show skill, style at ‘Akapela’ concert

The Philippine Contemporary A cappella Society is proudly presenting Akapela, a unique, one-night-only contemporary a capella concert featuring two of the country’s most talented and in-demand vocal acts today—Pinopela and Baihana—at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza, Makati City, at 7:30 p.m. on April 23.

Pinopela is an alumni group of the internationally acclaimed Saint Louis University Glee Club, and was originally formed to compete in the Akapela Open three years ago. But since placing second in that contest in 2013 and emerging as champions in 2014, Pinopela has evolved into a true professional act.

Since then, Pinopela has been accepting accepting invitations to perform at various functions, and has wowed audiences previously unacquainted with conteporary a capalla singing. The group opened the Myx Mo 2015 anniversary concert at the SM Mall of Asia’s concert grounds and became one of that concert’s highlights after performing an a cappella OPM (original Filipino music) number with some of the country’s biggest stars. This year, Pinopela qualified for two international a cappella competitions.

Baihana, meanwhile, is an all-female vocal trio that also creates and arranges music. Let members Krina Cayabyab, Anna Graham and Mel Torre take you back in time with their doo-wop take on standards and current radio hits. Whether you’re a unabashed jazz lover or searching for entertainment after a hard day’s work, Baihana has something for you, and much more.

The Philippine Contemporary A capella Society, a young and dynamic group led by Cayabyab and JJ Valiente Pimpinio, aims to demonstrate leadership in the development, awareness, innovation, and education of the contemporary a cappella community, so that every Filipino musician, singer, educator and fan of this genre may further extend the love for vocal music.

Its mission is to promote and cultivate contemporary a cappella music in the Philippines through performance opportunities, recognition and education; foster local artists that they can be recognized around the world; and enrich OPM through vocal music.

The artistic team of Akapela is composed of director Mara Paulina Marasigan, musical directors Cayabyab and Pimpinio, and choreographer Stephen Vinas.

For tickets, visit the Ryan Cayabyab Music School at the basement of Robinsons Galleria mall, or call (632) 914-5055 and 637-9840, or call Pimpinio at 0917-6780952.
