2017 Cinemalaya names dozen short-film finalists

The Cinemalaya Foundation has announced the finalists in the Short Feature Film category of the 2017 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and Competition. For the first time in Cinemalaya’s history, 12 were selected, instead of the usual 10.

The Cinemalaya Selection Committee said the 174 entries to the short-film category were of high quality, adding that it “strongly feels that the list of entries in this year’s competition merits…two additional entries…to the traditional list of 10 films.”

The subject matter and themes of the finalists are wide-ranging, including children and family, transformation, history and memory, and justice and redemption.

The finalists are Aliens Ata by Karl Glenn Barit; Juana and the Sacred Shores by Antonne Santiago; Lola Loleng by Jean Cheryl Tagyamon; Fatima Marie Torres and the Invasion of Space Shuttle Pinas 25 by Carlo Francisco Manatad; Bawod (Bent) by Terimar “TM” Malones; Nakaw by Arvin Belarmino; Sorry for the Inconvenience by Carl Adrian Chavez; Hilom by Paul “PR” Patindol; Manong ng Pa-aling by E del Mundo; Maria by Jaime Habac Jr.; Nakauwi Na by Marvin Cabangunay; and Islabodan by Juan Carlo Tarobal.

The 12 short films will be screened during the 2017 Cinemalaya from August 4 to 13, 2017 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Ayala Cinemas.

The winner of the Best Short Feature Film prize will receive P150,000 and the Balanghai trophy during the Cinemalaya Awards Night at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) on August 13.
