51 shipping firms adopt MARINA emissions platform

More domestic shipping operators are embracing digital tools to cut fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions, with 51 companies nationwide now committing to adopt the Maritime Energy Demand Information and Analysis Software (MEDIAnS), the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) said.

The latest rollout was held in Zamboanga City, where 12 shipping companies from the Zamboanga Peninsula voluntarily joined the government’s emissions tracking initiative during a pilot testing and training workshop conducted by MARINA’s Marine Environment Protection Development Service and MARINA Regional Office IX.

MARINA Administrator Sonia Bautista Malaluan said 27 industry participants were trained on the use of MEDIAnS, including vessel registration, voyage reporting, real-time fuel data entry, energy analytics and emissions monitoring.

“The rollout signals an industry-wide pivot under the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028, where commercial viability is closely tied to decarbonization,” Malaluan said.

MARINA Regional Office IX Director Farida Cunanan said the maritime industry must now prioritize energy efficiency, digitalization and greenhouse gas reduction alongside safety standards.

Developed by MARINA in partnership with the University of the Philippines Diliman and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, the platform collects and analyzes fuel and energy data from domestic vessels to help shipping firms improve fuel efficiency and optimize routes.

MARINA said the system also provides regulators with reliable emissions data needed to formulate greener shipping policies while helping operators lower operating costs. Following the successful pilot in Zamboanga, the agency expects wider adoption of the platform as part of the country’s push toward a more sustainable maritime industry. TRACY CABRERA
