The Philippines’ hosting of the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu was not only a showcase of regional diplomacy but also a reflection of the country’s ability to present itself with confidence, culture, and hospitality. At the center of this effort was First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, whose active participation throughout the summit preparations revealed a modern and dynamic approach to the role of a First Lady.
Liza Marcos proved that leadership is not limited to elected officials alone. While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. focused on strengthening regional cooperation and addressing economic and geopolitical concerns, the First Lady played an equally important role in ensuring that the Philippines delivered a world-class hosting experience to ASEAN leaders and delegates.
Her involvement was far from ceremonial. She personally conducted inspections of the Mactan Expo, summit venues, and media centers to ensure that operations would run smoothly. She also met with Leaders’ Liaison Officers to oversee preparations and guarantee that visiting dignitaries would experience the warmth and hospitality that Filipinos are known for. Such hands-on leadership demonstrated her attention to detail and commitment to presenting the country at its best.
More importantly, Liza Marcos used the ASEAN Summit as an opportunity to promote Filipino culture and identity. During a special luncheon for the spouses of Southeast Asian leaders, she introduced guests to the vibrant energy of the Sinulog festival, one of Cebu’s most celebrated traditions. She also highlighted Filipino artistry through displays of handcrafted guitars, silk scarves, and locally produced pearls. These cultural presentations served not only as entertainment but also as a powerful form of diplomacy that emphasized the creativity and pride of the Filipino people.
Her participation in discussions regarding the renovation of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) for the country’s upcoming 2026 ASEAN Chairmanship further underscored her dedication to long-term national preparations. This initiative reflected an understanding that international hosting requires careful planning, infrastructure development, and sustained commitment.
Some may view the active presence of a First Lady in state affairs as unusual, but Liza Marcos demonstrated that visibility can be constructive when used to support national goals. Rather than overshadowing government leaders, she complemented the administration’s efforts by strengthening the cultural and human side of diplomacy.
The 48th ASEAN Summit showed that successful diplomacy extends beyond formal meetings and policy discussions. It also depends on hospitality, cultural exchange, and national presentation. Through her active involvement, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos helped present the Philippines as a nation that is prepared, culturally rich, and capable of leadership in Southeast Asia.
In many ways, Liza Marcos has redefined what it means to be a First Lady in modern Philippine politics—an advocate of culture, a partner in governance, and a visible force in strengthening the country’s image on the international stage.
