Meralco, partners to power Phl’s renewable energy landscape

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is taking a major step toward strengthening the Philippines’ clean energy landscape after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN) and Vietnam-based VinEnergo Energy Joint Stock Company.

The agreement signals a joint push to explore large-scale renewable energy developments, with a potential capacity of up to 25 gigawatts, including integrated energy storage systems. The initiative is seen as part of broader efforts to meet the country’s rising electricity demand while transitioning toward more sustainable sources.

MGEN president and chief executive officer Emmanuel Rubio highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting that “through the memorandum, initiatives will be made to assess how large-scale renewable energy, storage and related infrastructure can contribute to the country’s evolving energy requirements.”

Beyond renewable power generation, the partnership will also examine opportunities in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. This includes the possible rollout of EV charging networks and strategies to accelerate EV adoption across the Philippines—an emerging sector aligned with global decarbonization goals.

VinEnergo general director Nguyen Anh Khoa welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing its long-term potential. “(his company) is pleased to partner with Meralco and MGEN to explore innovative solutions in building renewable energy solutions that can support the Philippines’ growing energy needs and sustainability goals,” he said.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to advancing clean energy and strengthening long-term energy security,” Mr. Nguyen enthused. He added that the collaboration could extend further within the Vingroup ecosystem, stating, “We also look forward to exploring broader opportunities for collaboration between Meralco, MGEN, VinEnergo and the Vingroup ecosystem to create lasting value for the communities we serve.”

For Meralco, the agreement serves as an initial framework rather than a final commitment to specific projects. Executive vice president and chief operating officer Ronnie Aperocho explained that all potential ventures will still undergo separate evaluations and must comply with regulatory requirements before implementation.

“With this partnership . . . we will leverage on our respective capabilities and expertise to pursue opportunities that create transformative value, build a more resilient energy sector, help achieve the country’s long-term energy security goals and contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” Aperocho pointed out.

As discussions move forward, the partnership underscores a growing regional collaboration aimed at accelerating renewable energy adoption while reinforcing the Philippines’ long-term energy security and sustainability ambitions. TRACY CABRERA
