China Banking Corp. (China Bank) has named longtime leader Gilbert U. Dee as chairman emeritus following his decision to relinquish key governance positions within the banking group effective Oct. 7, 2026.
Dee stepped down as the bank’s vice chairman and chairman of subsidiary CBC Properties & Computer Center Inc., concluding a 57-year tenure with the group that included 22 years as China Bank chairman from 1989 to 2011.
During his chairmanship, China Bank secured a universal banking license in 1991, allowing it to broaden its operations beyond traditional commercial banking and expand into investment banking and other financial activities.
The bank also strengthened its financial services portfolio through a bancassurance partnership with Manulife Philippines in 2007, resulting in the establishment of Manulife China Bank Life Assurance Corp.
That same year, China Bank acquired Manila Bank, paving the way for its expansion into retail and thrift banking. The move led to the establishment of China Bank Savings in 2008, extending the group’s reach into a wider segment of the banking market.
As chairman emeritus, Dee will continue to provide guidance to the bank, allowing it to draw on his decades of experience as it adapts to the changing financial services industry and advances its digital banking initiatives.
His appointment recognizes his longstanding contribution to the institution as China Bank continues to develop its services and respond to evolving customer needs.
