AFP reaffirms defense commitment amid rising global tensions

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Thursday reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to protecting the nation amid growing regional uncertainties and heightened global tensions.

In a statement, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized that the military remains resolute in fulfilling its mandate under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the country’s commander-in-chief.

“Today, the AFP stands united and future-ready, not to provoke war but to deter conflict and defend the nation with valor, vigilance, and vital partnerships across the globe,” Brawner said.

He underscored the AFP’s proud legacy, which traces its roots back to 1897 and has been shaped by centuries of struggle and sacrifice.

“From fighting colonial rule to addressing modern-day threats, this long and storied history is the foundation of the Filipino warrior’s strength and identity. More than weaponry or technology, it is this unshakable spirit and patriotism that defines the AFP’s true might,” he added.

Brawner noted that while the AFP draws strength from its past, it is also fully focused on modernization and transformation.

“Guided by its Transformation Roadmap, the AFP continues to evolve into a modern, agile, and multi-domain joint force — capable of addressing both conventional and emerging threats. New specialized commands in cyber defense, intelligence, special operations, and strategic planning ensure the protection of the nation across land, sea, air, cyberspace, and the information domain,” he said.

The AFP’s renewed pledge comes amid growing concerns over regional security challenges, with the military signaling its readiness to adapt and respond decisively to the demands of modern warfare.
