BBM opens Mactan airport parallel runway

Exponential increase in tourism and economic activity is seen in the province of Cebu as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the opening of a parallel runway at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista joined the Chief Executive in inspecting the 2.56-kilometer runway, which is expected to accommodate the surge of air traffic in Cebu Province as well as other provinces in Central Visayas.

Pres. Marcos cited Cebu Province as the center of trade and tourism in the region, thus making the alternate runway available for more flights would lead to employment and inclusive growth.

“This airport has been instrumental not only in the development of this province, but also the Central Visayas region and other provinces that are served by flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport,” Pres. Marcos said.

As the first and only parallel runway in the Philippines, this runway is a bold leap forward. It will help in your competitiveness, in your connectivity, and in your capacity to take in visitors,” he added.

In 2024, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) reported passenger surge at the airport after recording 11.3 million passengers—8.5 million domestic and 2.8 international passengers, respectively—via 99,100 flights. According to the MCIAA, the airport tallied 13% growth in domestic travelers and a 12% increase in international passengers.

On the other hand, the airport has handled 67 million kg of cargo in 2024.
