Celebrating, reminiscing DZMM

I was at the caravan of DZMM Serbisyong Kapamilya at Ayala Malls Felize in Marcos Highway last Friday.

I was convinced to go and see the show with a dear cousin, Ret. Col. Severina Anacion Rojas who wanted to see in person one of the station’s anchors. Dan Capucion, a townmate from Lopez, Quezon.

Most of the announcers of the network were invited to reach out and break bread with their listeners in the flesh.

At the start of the show, the only anchors I saw familiar, at the backstage, aside from Dan whom I’ve just met for the first time, were Ahwel Paz and Robert Mano.

According to Ahwel, the caravan was meant to announce to one and all that DZMM is alive and kicking although this kind of project has been identified with the network ages ago where they go out to the filed and rub elbows with the common people..

But I saw life-sized photos of other DZMM hosts Charo Santos-Concio, Noli de Castro, Alvin Elchico, Tony Velasquez, Doris Bigornia, Karmina Constantino, among others, posted on panels that adorned commercial booths.

Dan goes on board on graveyard shift at midnight until the wee hours at the break of dawn while Ahwelis the station’s entertainment blubber.

Interestingly, Capucion was hired as anchor, according to him, only a few months ago after working for DWPM, the radio AM band of ABS-CBN right after it was shut down by the previous administration.

After some time, it went back to its original name, DZMM.

The station reminds me of a lot of memories.

It was our home less than four decades ago when Angelique Lazo was assigned as host of an early afternoon show, “Star Patrol” with Apa Ongpin as co-host. I was the producer of the show and my field reporters were Obette Serrano and the late Mario V. Dumaual with Ronald Lerum as Talent Coordinator.

We prevailed on-air for years but the program eventually folded up and Angelique concentrated on TV.

DZMM will always be part of my entertainment broadcast career.

Hail! DZMM. (Boy Villasanta)
