Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero has assured the public that the impending impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio will be handled with utmost seriousness and respect for due process, amid concerns that it could devolve into a political spectacle following the recent midterm elections.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Senado media forum, Escudero downplayed fears that the entry of newly elected senators could disrupt the solemnity of the proceedings. He pointed to the composition of the incoming Senate, noting that five of the winners are reelectionists and three are outgoing members of the House of Representatives.
He said these legislators are seasoned public servants with strong knowledge of the law and parliamentary procedures, which bodes well for ensuring an orderly and constitutional process.
At the same time, Escudero emphasized that the trial, regardless of who presides over it, will adhere to constitutional guidelines. “Whether it would be somebody else or himself, it would be done peaceably and in order as stipulated by the Constitution,” he affirmed.
When asked about the potential stance of the incoming senators on the issue, Escudero declined to speculate, saying, “any pre-game analysis could be interpreted as prejudgment.” He also urged his fellow lawmakers, particularly the newly elected ones, to refrain from making premature statements that could sow confusion or be misinterpreted.
Meanwhile, attention has turned to the House prosecution team, which observers say has been significantly strengthened with the inclusion of high-profile legal figures.
Mamamayang Liberal (ML) party-list representative-elect Leila De Lima and Akbayan party-list congressman-elect Atty. Jose Manuel Tadeo “Chel” Diokno have both agreed to join the prosecution panel upon the invitation of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez. They replaced Ako Bicol’s Raul Angelo “Jil” Bongalon and General Santos Rep. Loreto Acharon, both of whom lost their reelection bids.
“With the addition of incoming representatives De Lima and Diokno, we see the convergence of moral clarity and legal precision in our pursuit of conviction. Their presence brings not only valuable expertise but also a profound human rights perspective that elevates the quality of the entire proceeding,” said Lanao del Sur Rep. Ziaur-Rahman “Zia” Alonto Adiong.”De Lima’s presence has a deep symbolic and institutional impact, especially since she has extensive experience being a former senator and justice secretary. On the other hand, Diokno has spent decades defending rights, educating lawyers, and upholding the Constitution. His presence assures the public that this trial is about truth, not theatrics, not power plays,” he added. TRACY CABRERA
