The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) renewed its appeal recently for the immediate release of the MV Galaxy Leader crew, who have been held captive by the Houthi group since November 2023.
The call coincided with the observance of the 2024 World Maritime Day, emphasizing the crucial role that Filipino seafarers play in promoting “global peace and prosperity.”
“We take this opportunity to reiterate the call from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations Security Council, among others, for respect for navigational rights and freedoms, and for the swift release of the Galaxy Leader and its crew,” the DFA stated.
The Houthis hijacked the cargo vessel in the Red Sea near Hodeidah last November, taking hostage its 25 crew members, including 17 Filipinos.
The Red Sea has faced increased hostilities since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeting vessels associated with Israel.
Additionally, the DFA expressed gratitude to the global maritime community for recognizing seafarers’ rights to refuse assignments in designated high-risk areas.
“As we celebrate World Maritime Day, the Philippines calls on all states and stakeholders to reaffirm their commitments to promoting a safe, secure, and sustainable maritime sector,” the department added.
The DFA also emphasized the importance of advocating for the rights and welfare of seafarers, ensuring they are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
Beyond mariners’ rights, the DFA reaffirmed its dedication to preserving the marine environment by continuously promoting the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the “constitution of the ocean.”
