Cyclists and tourists, particularly Manilenos, now get to enjoy the historic significance of Intramuros with a twist, after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) completes the expansion of bike lanes inside the walled city.
Cyclists can now bike around a stretch of almost 19 kilometers of safe lanes. Last March, the transport agency launched 9.6 kilometers of bike lanes.
Transportation Assistant Secretary for Road Transport Non-Infrastructure Jose Lim IV said the expanded bike lanes will benefit various stakeholders—tourists, students, persons with disabilities, residents, among others.
“These bike lanes stand to benefit 1.9 million cyclists, tourists, students and other stakeholders,” Asec. Lim said.
He added the bike lanes play an important role in attracting tourists in Intramuros for using offering guided tours using bicycles.
“The Active Transport project here in Intramuros has become unique because tourists were being offered guided tours around the historical landmarks while riding bicycles. We call it cycling tours,” he explained.
In partnership with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), and Intramuros Administration, the active transport infrastructure also includes pedestrian walkways, with PWD-accessibility ramps, open spaces and construction of four (4) public transport stops.
The Intramuros bike lanes are part of the 2,400 kilometers of bike lanes to be established by the DOTr by year 2028.
