DOTr unveils expanded active transport infra, cycling facilities in Metro Cebu

Thousands of Cebuano cyclists are expected to benefit from expanded active transport facilities in Metro Cebu after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in partnership with the Cebu local government broke ground for state-of-the-art active transport and cycling infrastructures in the metropolis last March 11, 2024.

Transportation Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure James Andres Melad said the project includes the expansion, upgrading, and maintenance of active transport infrastructure.

Additional bike lanes across the streets of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Cordova and Talisay, will be complemented by end-of-trip facilities such as bike racks and bike repair stations, added Asec. Melad.

“The expansion of our active transport infrastructure is not merely about roads and lanes; it symbolizes our dedication to promoting healthier lifestyles, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the overall quality of life for our residents,” he said.

Recognizing the growing importance of cycling as a viable and eco-friendly mode of transportation, Asec. Melad said the construction of end-of-trip cycling facilities is a significant milestone for active transport stakeholders.

“These facilities are not just parking spaces; they are a declaration of our commitment to encouraging active lifestyles, reducing traffic congestion, and providing commuters with viable alternatives to traditional modes of transport,” he said.

In collaboration with various government agencies, private sector partners, and local community, DOTr will stretch the bike lanes to 67.19 kilometers along selected roads in Metro Cebu.

The project also involves the maintenance and upgrade of 124.69 kilometers of existing bike lanes and putting up end-of-trip facilities, such as 138 bike racks and five bike repair stations installed in 23 locations across Metro Cebu.
