Jennifer Garciano Escoton Phillips who?
Jennifer, Jenny for short, is a Fil-Aussie whose colorful life has been inspiring a lot of Filipino women worldwide.
When fashion icon Goullee Gorospe was still alive, he was very proud of Jenny. “Jenny is a self-made woman,” said Goullee.
“I hope I can achieve even one fourth of what she has achieved,” quipped Lily Arriero, a widow in the US who still wants to enhance her life to help other people.
When Jenny was still in the Philippines, she was a movie star who had appeared in movies of Aga Muhlach and Joey de Leon. She was a ramp model for fashion stalwarts Gorospe, Frederick Peralta, Inno Sotto etc.
Jenny is a cousin of beauty queen-actress Pilar Pilapil. “Tita—a term of respect for an aunt by blood or an older woman by affinity—Pilar and I are very close to each other. When she went to Australia, our bond became closer and deeper,” she shared.
Modeling sent her to Hong Kong and other Asian countries like China, Singapore, Malaysia etc.
It was in HK where she met her husband David Phillips from Australia who at the time was assigned in the former British colony. The meeting blossomed into love which finally ended at the altar. Although she wasn’t discouraged by David to pursue her modeling career, she herself decided to become a fulltime housewife, instead, and later, a mom.
David was eventually assigned to Indonesia where Jenny met the Moores, the family of Fil-Briton singer Seann Miley Moore whose mom is a Filipino.
Seann was still a small boy at the time, and who had already shown his unique penchant for gender-bender. “Maliit pa si Seann, alam kong bading na siya. At naging close kami at ang pamilya niya (Even when Seann was still a kid, I knew he was different in his actuations, that he was gay. From there on, my family and his were already close),” recalled Jenny. “Magaan na ang loob namin sa isa’t isa kaya magkasundo kami ni Seann. Pati na ang nanay, ang tatay at ang kapatid niyang babae (Seann and I clicked in an instant because we shared light feelings with each other. That could also be said with his mom, dad and sister),” qualified Jenny.
Both the Phillipses and the Moores were later relocated to Sydney, Australia after their respective men of the house were assigned there.
In Down Under, they are still the company they keep.
In the growing up years of Seann, though, aside from his family, Jenny was his shield. “Naku, binu-bully si Seann sa mga schools sa Australia dahil bading siya. Ang mga anak ko ang nagtatanggol sa kanya (Oh! Seann was bullied in schools in Australia because he was gay. May children would defend him),” she volunteered.
But Seann was talented so he pursued his music and Jenny was always at his beck and call. “Ako bale ang mentor niya lalo na sa fashion (I was his mentor especially in fashion),” Jenny quipped.
Until Miley Moore joined “The X Factor” in London, also his roots. Since he was away from home, Seann communicated with Jenny through cyber. He took the whole United Kingdom by storm and Jenny and the Moores were proud of him.
When Seann went back to Australia before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, he had a more solid musicality. “It’s Tita Jenny who gives me pieces of advice about my music and my fashion,” he beamed with pride.
On the side, Jenny is also a mental health coach and NLP practitioner aside from being a psychotherapist and clinical hypnotherapist. She’s also a mentor and social worker.
When Seann lost at the semi-final round for the “The Voice,” she advised him that it wasn’t the end of the world. “He’s already an international singer,” she said.
Garciano Escoton Phillips is happily married for thirty two years with four gorgeous children, namely Liz, Alex, Seb and Francis.
